Stories from Bolivia

Warmi Kewiñas

When fire sweeps through the Andes, it doesn’t just burn trees; it consumes everything in its path. Entire forests, unique wildlife, and even the small homes and crops of local families are lost to the flames. In the past, communities watched with pain as their land was stripped of life because they lacked the tools and training to fight back.

Through Acción Andina partners Faunagua and Armonía, community forest firefighters are being trained to be the first line of defense.

Community-Led Fire Brigades

In the community of Kumara, a group of women has become the heart of ecological restoration. They do not only plant trees; they plant hope, knowledge, and a future for their children. They chose the name Warmi Kewiñas because they identify with the native Kewiña tree—they withstand the cold, they give life, and they are resilient in the face of change.

Through Acción Andina partner Faunagua, the Warmi Kewiñas are leading the way in high-altitude reforestation.
