The Conversation: Lessons from the Incas
Many tropical glaciers in the Andes are expected to disappear in the next few decades. Their meltwater sustains millions of people, feeding crops in the dry season, supplying Peru’s capital Lima and other big cities, and even boosting the Amazon river. New research co-authored by Constantino Aucca Chutas suggests solutions may lie in environmental knowledge that the Incas and their predecessors developed centuries ago.

How Polylepis forests are reshaping the Andes
High in the Andes, Constantino Aucca Chutas is restoring ancient Polylepis forests and water systems with the help of local communities and Incan tradition. It’s 5am in Peru when Constantino Aucca Chutas answers his phone. He shrugs off apologies for calling him at such an early hour, explaining that he’s shortly heading out to visit a local reforestation project. ‘It’s normal to be awake at this time,’ he says, the hint of a smile in his voice.

PRESS RELEASE: Textile and Conservation Leaders Unite to Restore Forests and Water in Peru’s Chincha Valley
CHINCHA, PERU – Reforestation initiative Acción Andina and sustainable textile leader Textil del Valle are joining forces to plant 30,000 native trees and restore wetlands in Peru’s Chincha Valley—an effort that will enhance water security for thousands of families and protect fragile Andean ecosystems. The project, implemented by lead Acción Andina partner Asociación Ecosistemas Andinos (ECOAN) and supported by global apparel brands Patagonia and Lacoste (in partnership with Lacoste Foundation), combines community engagement, ecological restoration and green infrastructure.

Mastercard Feature: Harking back to the Inca’s golden past to plant a greener future
Last year, the Mastercard-led Priceless Planet Coalition, which aims to restore 100 million trees worldwide, expanded its planting sites to include nearly 1,000 acres in Peru and Ecuador. By the end of 2024, 579,306 trees had been planted by five local partners representing 11 Acción Andina projects.
